Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has announced that the platform will soon introduce voice and video chat capabilities, enabling users to communicate with others on Twitter without the need to share their phone number.
In a tweet, Musk revealed that the upcoming feature will allow users to initiate voice and video calls directly from their Twitter handles to any other user on the platform. This means that individuals will be able to have conversations with people around the world. Additionally, Musk mentioned that Twitter direct messages (DMs) will now have encryption, and users will be able to respond to any message in a thread, not just the most recent one. Furthermore, users will have the option to react to messages using any emoji.
Musk stated, “Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” in a tweet on Tuesday.
Last year, Musk hinted at plans for “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App,” which would include features like encrypted DMs, longform tweets, and payments.
The addition of voice and video chat to Twitter brings the platform in line with social media applications from Meta, including Facebook and Instagram, which already offer similar features.
Musk also mentioned that an encrypted version of Twitter DMs will be available starting Wednesday, but it is unclear if calls will also be encrypted.
In other news, Twitter recently announced its plan to clean up the platform by removing and archiving inactive accounts that have been dormant for several years.
