Russia bans use of Apple iPhones and iPads for work purposes, cites security concerns

As reported by the Interfax news agency (via Reuters) on Friday, Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development, led by Minister Maksut Shadaev, has implemented a ban on the use of Apple iPhones and iPads for work-related tasks among employees.

Shadaev announced during a digital conference, “We have introduced a restriction against the use of (Apple) mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, for accessing work-related applications and exchanging work-related emails.” He clarified that the use of iPhones for personal purposes is still permissible.

This prohibition comes about two months after assertions made by Russia’s primary domestic security agency, the FSB, claiming that a substantial number of Apple devices had been compromised due to a U.S.-orchestrated espionage operation. Apple refuted these allegations, while the U.S. National Security Agency, reportedly implicated by the FSB, refrained from responding to the claims at that time.

In other news, Apple is anticipated to host its 2023 iPhone launch event on September 12. According to insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the eagerly awaited launch event for the Apple iPhone 15 series is rumored to occur on either September 12 or Wednesday, September 13 of this year. If these reports hold true, pre-orders for the new iPhones are expected to commence on September 15, with the Apple iPhone 15 series likely hitting the market for sale on September 22.

A separate report from 9to5Mac, released last week, aligns with this schedule. It states that various carrier partners have already instructed their employees not to take time off on Wednesday, September 13, due to the anticipation of a significant smartphone announcement on that day.

Alongside the unveiling of the iPhone 15 lineup, the September event is expected to showcase updated versions of the Apple Watch, including the Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models. Furthermore, it is anticipated to disclose final details and launch dates for iOS 17 and other related operating system updates. Anticipation is steadily growing among Apple enthusiasts worldwide as they eagerly await the official unveiling of the latest innovations from the tech giant.
