According to initial reports from The Information, there are indications that OpenAI is currently working on the development of an app store (OpenAI app store). The aim is to create a platform where developers can monetize their AI models built on OpenAI’s technology.
The widely popular chatbot, ChatGPT, has already been integrated into Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. It has gained immense popularity and is often customised by enterprise customers to meet their specific requirements, such as fraud detection or market research. The proposed marketplace would provide an opportunity for developers to offer their customised AI models to other businesses.
During a meeting with developers in London, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly discussed the company’s plans for the marketplace. Additionally, two of OpenAI’s clients, Aquant and Khan Academy, have shown interest in making their ChatGPT-powered AI models available on OpenAI’s marketplace.
OpenAI’s entry into the app store market has the potential to introduce competition to existing app stores operated by its customers and technology partners, including Salesforce and Microsoft. By establishing a marketplace, OpenAI aims to broaden its customer base and extend the reach of its AI technology to a wider audience.
It is important to acknowledge the significant developments that have taken place in the AI development landscape in recent years. Notably, Microsoft made a substantial investment of at least $1 billion in OpenAI back in 2019, well before the remarkable emergence of ChatGPT.
Moreover, earlier this year, OpenAI secured an additional investment of $10 billion as part of a multi-year commitment. Concurrently, the latest version of their language model, GPT-4, was launched as scheduled.
